Fat Joe Says ‘Jealously’ at Root of Beef with Jay Z, Now They’re ‘Real Brothers’
How did two rap superstars go from bitter enemies to “real brothers?”
It all comes down to basketball.
Fat Joe appeared on “I Am Athlete” and explained why “jealously” played a huge role in his years-long beef with Jay Z … and how close things came to getting violent.
“I might have been a little jealous,” Joe admitted … “You know what i'm saying? He won at everything. He had the baddest chick in the world. He was just winning.”
Joe says the tension came to a head in 2003 — when Jay Z decided to enter a team in a high-profile basketball tournament at Rucker Park in Harlem.
Joe had already racked up 5 championships at Rucker and considered Rucker to be his turf. So, when Hov came along and tried to compete for the title, the leader of the Terror Squad took it personally.
“I was like ‘Goddamn’ … he wants everything! He’s walking to the games with Beyonce. Puffy’s doing the dance in the middle of the court. I'm like, ‘What the f**k is this!? They rolling up in professional tour buses … LeBron was about to play with him!”
"And I said, ‘Damn man! This man got all the money, the baddest chick. He’s the biggest in the game. I got the little street tournament and the man is coming in this year?!And so it was a little bit of jealousy.”
Joe says his Team Terror Squad was loaded with insane NBA superstars — from Carmelo Anthony to Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury, Mike Bobby and more!
Jay Z had Lamar Odom, Kenyon Martin … and oh, LeBron James!!!
But the Fat Joe vs. Jay Z hoops showdown never happened due a massive blackout that shut down power to the entire northeast!
Joe says it was probably a blessing in disguise.
“Honestly … I think some violence would have went down if that game would have went down,” Joe says.
So, how did the two superstars ultimately make peace? Joe explains how a Miami Heat basketball game and All-Star Weekend party for Michael Jordan changed everything.
The two have been super close ever since — and most recently teamed up to raise more than $1 million for the victims of a tragic apartment fire in the Bronx that claimed the lives of 17 people.
